Ref: GD1728 Categories: , ,

A handsome pair of 19th-century hand-carved stone pedestal column bases, each of circular form with a round column post base profile and substantial plinth-like presence. Nicely carved by hand, the pair have a superbly weathered patina and characterful natural surface, with softened edges, tonal variation, moss and lichen that give them the quiet authority and time-worn beauty of established English country-house garden ornaments.

As decorative architectural elements, the bases are highly versatile. Each has a central iron dowel or pin hole to the top, offering a useful fixing point for securing a statue or suitable decorative object. They could be used as focal points within a garden, courtyard or terrace, topped with finials, lanterns, jardinière urns, vases, garden sculptures or statues. Equally, they could be positioned to flank an entrance, garden path or gateway, or used as substantial posts within a garden entrance or around a pool.

A beautiful pair of architectural garden pieces, they would settle naturally into an established landscape or lend immediate age, texture and permanence to a newly formed garden scheme. Genuine, authentic hand-carved stone elements of this period and character are becoming increasingly rare to find, particularly as a decorative pair with such appealing weathering. With their honest materiality, softened carving and naturally aged surfaces, the pieces have a quiet wabi-sabi quality that celebrates imperfection, weathering and the beauty of time.

Condition note
Good antique condition with pronounced natural weathering and surface character throughout. The stone shows softened edges, tonal variation, moss and lichen, together with age-related marks and wear consistent with long-term outdoor use. There are a couple of historic patchwork repairs, as photographed, which are part of the pieces’ long life and reclaimed architectural character. These natural irregularities and old repairs contribute to their authentic aged appeal.

Installation and handling
These pieces are freestanding; however, because of their size, material and intended outdoor use, professional positioning by an experienced landscape gardener or builder is recommended, particularly if used to flank an entrance, gateway, pool or path. They should be installed on a stable, level and suitable foundation base. If topped with finials, lanterns, urns, sculpture or statuary, the selected object should be safely fixed, pinned or bedded as appropriate for its weight, exposure and location, making use of the existing central dowel/pin hole where suitable.
