Ref: GD-1002 Categories: ,

An original offset-lithograph exhibition poster on heavy wove paper after American artist Andy Warhol (1928-1987) titled “Morris International (Liz Taylor)”, 1965. Edition size unknown, presumed small.

Produced for Warhol’s first exhibition of work in Canada which was held at Morris International Gallery, 130 Bloor Street, Toronto, Canada on March 15th to April 3rd, 1965. Printer unknown and published by Morris International Gallery. The image featured on the poster is Warhol’s 1964 offset-lithograph edition “Liz”.

This exhibition poster features the portrait of the hugely successful actress, Elizabeth Taylor. Warhol first painted her portrait in 1963 when she was at the height of her career. Yet she was also severely ill with pneumonia. This highlights Warhol’s fascination with celebrity and death that began with his painting of Marilyn Monroe following her suicide in 1962 and continued throughout his oeuvre. In this portrait Warhol used a publicity photograph for Taylor’s film ‘Butterfield 8’ as the basis for the screenprint. It is typical of his 1960s Pop style with vibrant, flat blocks of colour. This poster was made for an exhibition held in 1965, the same year Warhol famously announced that he was ‘retiring’ from painting.  Source: Tate.org.uk

Condition –  Good. Has been mounted to conservation paper to support print. Slight crease on edge of mount but dose not affect poster in any way.  Please note that colour may appear different depending on the monitor used.

Andy Warhol born Andrew Warhola; August 6, 1928 – February 22, 1987) was an American artist, film director, and producer who was a leading figure in the visual art movement known as pop art. His works explore the relationship between artistic expression, advertising, and celebrity culture that flourished by the 1960s, and span a variety of media, including painting, silkscreening, photography, film, and sculpture. Some of his best known works include the silkscreen paintings Campbell’s Soup Cans (1962) and Marilyn Diptych (1962), the experimental film Chelsea Girls (1966), and the multimedia events known as the Exploding Plastic Inevitable (1966–67).
